  Prologue

  Tetartos Realm – Millennia Ago

“You will stay here, babe. There’s nothing to worry about.” Her mother’s quiet voice usually calmed her, but not now. Ileana searched her blue eyes and pushed her chin up. She was strong and she wanted to help. When she opened her mouth to say so, her mother shook her head, the long gold and brown waves shifting over her mother’s shoulders. “We’ve dealt with others they’ve sent and we’ll handle these too, but they can never know about you, love.” Her mother’s warm hand stroked her long wild hair, it was the same color as her mama’s.

“But I can help,” she said with feeling, her eyes darting back and forth between them.

Her father’s lake blue eyes crinkled at the side as he kissed her forehead. She closed her eyes as his beard tickled her skin. She inhaled the scent of him instead of the wet rock smell of the cave.

It had been the three of them her entire life. No one else, just her, Mama and Papa, and she was scared something bad was going to happen. Her stomach hurt and she’d never felt the scratching under her skin. This was all wrong. Her animal felt it too; it was pacing in her mind, crying. She told it to quiet, warriors didn’t cry.

“You will stay here, Ileana,” her papa said, and he didn’t sound happy with her. She felt a lump form in her throat as she looked up into her father’s serious eyes. If she could sneak out, she would find them. Help them. They’d taught her what to do since she was a small babe. It had started as games, but later when she was big enough, they’d trained her for real. This was what they knew was coming. She nodded, her chin coming back, tilting high and proud. She was a warrior.

“I’m big enough to fight too,” she said with confidence. She was ten summers.

“No, love. They can never see you.” Her mother’s blue eyes were bright with the love, but stern. Her heart beat faster; they would never let her help.

“You know what to do.” Her father’s deep growl rumbled in the small cavern.

“Yes.” Her chest hurt, but she would not let them see her fear. Fear was for babes and she only had to remind herself that she was a fierce warrior cat. She just had to show them.

Her father’s eyes softened as he smiled down at her, and then he lifted her up into his strong arms. He hugged her tight to his warm chest, and she ran her cheek over his beard, just a little. She swallowed back the tears that she couldn’t let them see and wrapped her arms around the bulk of his shoulders. Her mother came up behind her and snuggled into her back. Comfort. Warmth. She loved her parents, they were everything to her. The only beings in her world.

“Be strong, little one. We’ll return soon.” Did her mama’s voice catch? Was she worried too? Ileana’s heart raced in her chest as her head spun to look. Her mother smiled, she didn’t look scared, but she’d overheard her mama and papa talking when they thought she was asleep. Her father hadn’t wanted her mother to go fight with him; he’d said there were too many warriors in the hills searching for them. Her mama said they should run, but Papa said it was too late. They’d argued and whispered and now her mama was going with him. They wouldn’t tell her why.

Her father kissed her forehead and set her on her feet before her mama scooped her up and cuddled her. “Stay deep in the cave until we return for you. We will be with you here.” Her mother kissed her hair, a reminder that she could always talk to them in their heads, that she wouldn’t be alone in the dark. Her mother didn’t know that Ileana planned to sneak out behind them and help.

Her mother put a warm hand against Ileana’s chest. “We’re also with you here always. You’re our sweet special babe.” Ileana didn’t see anything special in having no scent, except that she could use it to sneak up on some of the warriors hunting her parents instead of using it to hide.

Her mama and papa made sure she was smart. Put pictures in her head of all their enemies. All the bad Immortals so she’d know who they were if she saw them. They said it was safer to stay away from others because the Immortals were wild and fighting for dominance and territories. Mama and Papa taught her that it was dangerous and she had to be smart, pay attention to everything around her. She already knew how to kill any beast who threatened her. She even knew how to use their skins to protect her body and hold the blades her papa taught her to make.

Her father’s deep voice rumbled behind her and she turned in her mother’s arms. “You will not leave this cave.”

  She nodded. “Yes, Papa.”

“We need to go, Lil,” he said to her mother, and she was set on her feet in front of them.

Her mother crouched down in front of her and her eyes were filled with love and something else that scared Ileana, it looked like sadness. “We love you with every inch of our hearts, little one.” She hugged her and kissed her face.

Her father gave her a hard look before doing the same. “You know what to do.” Shivers ran over her skin at his words. There was a place she was supposed to go if they were separated. Her stomach turned when he kissed her cheek. “I need you to be strong.”

She nodded, but her chest hurt from how hard her heart beat.

They smiled at her one more time before turning and walking toward the cave entrance.

She stood there staring at their backs, determined. Her father turned back and winked at her before slamming his fist into the ceiling of the cave entrance, sending rock raining down, trapping her in the dark.

“No!” she cried as dirt filled her throat. Fear made it hard to breathe.

I know my brave girl wanted to follow her mama and papa, but not this time. No tears, love, remember you’re papa’s little warrior. Her father’s deep soothing voice came into her mind. He’d known her plan and made it so she couldn’t come. She yowled and choked on the dust and fear clogging her throat. She tried to cut off the tears streaming down her face as she argued with them in their minds, all the while listening to their voices in the dark as they tracked down the mountain. A tight sob escaped as she climbed up the rocks blocking the cave entrance. No light filtered in, so she used her senses to start pulling stone and dirt from the top.

  She knew when
her parents started fighting the warriors. They got quiet, still a touch in her head, but no soothing words. Her mind raced and worry nearly doubled her over. She had to get to them. Tears continued streaming down her face as she worked to get free.

The first cut to her fingers came a long time later. She couldn’t even smell the blood through the dust in her nose. She kept digging and rocks fell down to her right. Her heart soared when she saw a sliver of light. It was still too small and far back, maybe the size of her hand.

She was digging to get to the light when pain shot through the link. It was so fast and sharp she cried out and lost her grip. She fell to the ground yowling in agony as her mother’s words came to her, I love you more than life, Ileana. Remember that I’m with you always, love.

Ileana felt a sharp snap in her head and chest as her mother’s link ripped away, was gone. Her own roars filled her ears as her father’s anguish and fury filled her mind. She almost doubled with the pain, but she forced her legs to climb again, digging harder and faster, her bloody hands sliding on the rocks as she dug. She had to get out, had to get to them. “Mama!” she cried into the nothing. Tears blurred her vision, but she kept pulling rocks and sliding her small body into the small hole she was making.

Stay hidden, stay safe. Do as I told you, Ileana, and always know that we loved you. Her papa. No! No! No! She felt her vision darken as his link was ripped from her; she fought through the pain. She had to get to them. She prayed to the Creators over and over. “Please. Please. Please.” They might just be hurt and she could save them. “Please. Please.” She refused to believe they were gone.

She panted and cried until she finally made a hole big enough to slide through. Cuts ran over her back and legs and she couldn’t feel her fingers. The minute the sun hit her face she transformed and ran down the mountain as fast as her legs would carry her. Her cat yowled and roared as she bounded around fallen trees. It was silent. No birdsong, no predators lying in wait, just death. She stumbled at the smell. Metallic and strong. So much it burned her nose and churned her stomach.
